The great and chief end, therefore, of men's uniting into commonwealths, and putting themselves under government, is the preservation of their property.
Second Treatise of Civil Government (1690) ch. 8, sect. 95

The Sherman Hill Association was formed in 1977 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and improvement of the historic neighborhood, the enhancement of the social environment, and the encouragement of civic pride. Through the efforts of its members, the area has maintained a prominent place in Des Moines' heritage and its architecture earned distinction as a historic district in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today the Sherman Hill Association is supported by a diverse membership of individuals, families, landlords and neighborhood business property owners. The neighborhood has created a special niche for itself with the historic character of its older single-family and multi-family housing. The preservation of that housing stock has encouraged a movement of people back to the city. Even more, it has created an environment that is diverse in income, households, race, and age.

The Sherman Hill Association is proud of the part we have played in preserving the historic elements that make our neighborhood unique. Our latest achievements are the addition of historic streetlights to our neighborhood and our recognition as a designated neighborhood for city planning, see the Historic Street Light Project or the City Plan for further details. The services offered by the SHA benefit the residents of Sherman Hill and those who live and work in the Des Moines area. Some of the services of the association include:

Meetings

The SHA holds quarterly meetings on the second Monday in February, May, and August. The annual membership meeting is in November. The meetings (at 7:00 p.m.) follow a potluck meal (at 6:30 p.m.) an opportunity to socialize.

Publications

The SHA Newsletter is published periodically and distributed to SHA members and throughout the neighborhood. Special mailings and flier distribution inform the neighborhood of current issues on an as needed basis.

Membership

Membership in the SHA provides support for the development of Sherman Hill and other areas. Anyone can join the association. Applications are available at the SHA office.
