1999 Walking Tour of Homes

President's Column

By Sonja Roberts

This is an official Thank You for your outstanding efforts in making the "Doors To The Past" walking tour our biggest success ever! The weather was permitting and our neighborhood was the proud host/hostess to over 2,300 visitors. We looked gooooood!

The House Tour is an annual event that is successful due to the efforts of over one hundred volunteers. A very special thank you to Sharon Glenn for all her efforts in its success. Although this year's tour did not have an official "chair", the title definitely belongs to Sharon.

Don't forget our quarterly meeting on Monday November 8th. We will be having elections for board members, (please consider running...we need you), revving up for the Holiday Progressive Dinners, and simply enjoying the time to visit with friends.

There is still little to report on Celebrity Care. We are in the third round of negotiations but it is complicated due to "her" sordid past. Hopefully there will be more news the next time we meet.

Soon we will be observing what our neighborhood looks like with all of the cobra head light fixtures turned off. When our light levels have been measured, we will hopefully begin to see the removal of those unsightly poles. The slow wheels of progress continue to move ahead at a snail's pace.

Recently, there is quite a bit of discussion about the ML King Jr. Parkway and I-235 expansion. There will be opportunities to move several of the displaced homes into Sherman Hill. If you know of any one, who might be interested in purchasing a home here in the next couple of years, please let a board member know so that we may keep a list.

Early Holiday Greetings to You and Yours! See you at the Quarterly Meeting!

In original frames that measure 21 3/4 x 66 inches (glass surface measure 17 1/4 x 60 1/2 inches).

1999 Walking Tour of Homes

By Sharon Glenn

In spite of two rainy Sunday afternoons, the 1999 tour was a resounding success! Over 2300 people attended the tour, a new record. We have many people to thank, so let's start with the tour hosts: The Wallace House Foundation; Shauneen Linton and David Schlarmann; Catherine Lillehoj and Carlton Salmons; Deb Copeland and Jeremy Phillips; Betty Jo and Wilbur Wilcox; Hal Davis and York Taenzer; Jo Campney and Sue Terry; Diana and Tony Smith; and Marc Schelle. Your homes never looked lovelier and your generosity insured our success. Thank you so much!

Many others made important contributions to this year's tour. Heartfelt thanks to: Lea Ann and Rick Knecht for the yummy food and all their hard work organizing and running the food stand; Scott Slaughter and Todd Schroder for their many dedicated hours at the Wallace House; Hal Davis for his fabulous job with public relations; York Taenzer for coordinating the mailing; Betty Jo Wilcox for her delicious cinnamon rolls; Anthony Horvath and Wade Scherrer for hosting the wonderful tour host party; Art On The Hill, Hill Furniture, and Galleria Custom Framing for raffle prizes; Lucky Tomaszek for a great job coordinating all the volunteers; Darrell Mertz of Ampersand, Inc. for all his work on the beautiful publications; our ticket outlets- Borders Books and Music, Callanan Collection, and Chocolatarie Stam; Carter House Inn for donating a night's stay as a door prize; the McConahan, and the Des Moines String Quartet featuring Ben Frambauch, James Juneau, Dan Lucas, and Marty Lucas; Dan Bolt, signs; Randa LeJeune for promoting the tour at the Beaverdale Fall Festival parade; Bret, Kathy, and Mambo McFarlin, Darrell Mertz and Lynn Sorafka for taking care of the doors and house number signs; the scores of volunteers who helped everyone during the tour (some worked all four days!); and last but not least, House Tour chair emeritus, Kathy McFarlin, for all her encouragement and help. Thanks, Kathy, you made all of our jobs easier.

We hope we haven't forgotten everyone. So many people were involved in making this tour successful, including you, our neighbors, whose community pride have made our neighborhood so beautiful.

Thanks again from the 1999 Walking Tour Committee: Dawn Bentley, Jo Campney, Hal Davis, Sharon Glenn, Shauneen Linton, Judy McClure, Cindy Nelson, Nancy Nicholas, Sonja Roberts, Wade Scherrer, and David Schlarmann.

You've Got Mail?

I am collecting e-mail addresses of SHA members who wish to get info about the neighborhood events sent to them via e-mail. I may even publish an Internet version of this newsletter if enough people are interested. Please send your e-mail addresses to me at RICKK10071@AOL.COM.

Thanks,

Rick Knecht

SHA Needs You!

Please consider running for a position on the board of the Sherman Hill Association. You will need to have a petition with at least ten association member signatures in order to run.

It's the people that make us a community and a neighborhood, not just a collection of houses. As different people rotate through these board positions, new ideas, and inputs strengthen and enhance our bonds to one another.

The walking tour is just an indication of what we can accomplish as a collective unit.

Be part of something wonderful: the neighborhood called Sherman Hill.
