Major Hoyt Sherman built the central section of this building
as his home. It was one of the most elaborate residences in
Sherman Hill and remains today a good example of late 19th
century decor. The property was leased to the Des Moines
Women's Club in 1907. The construction of Des Moines' first
art gallery was the Club's first project. The 1400 seat
auditorium addition to the east was built in 1922.
It has one of the finest collections of antique paintings
and furnishings in the Midwest.
