1605 Woodland Avenue - 1883
Sheuerman House
Any old place I can hang my hat is home sweet home to
me.
Title of song, William Jerome, American songwriter,
1901.
When it was constructed by Leopold Sheuerman, founder of the
Capital city Woolen Mills, it was the only residence between
15th and 17th streets on Woodland Avenue. Unfortunately, in
the mid-20th century the house was used as a nursing home and
home for delinquents.
This house was minus tower, porch, and detail prior to the
owners taking on the project. The tower was reconstructed on
the ground and lifted via helicopter, and set in place. The
porch design resulted from the lucky find of a historic photo
of the house. Both set the stage for continuing success.
